Tips for a worry-free Christmas season
Published on • 3 minute read
The lights, the tree, the crackling fire. The things that make the holidays so special also call for a little extra attention. As we celebrate this season of joy - let’s take a moment to cherish what truly matters: family, kindness, and gratitude. Then, let’s make sure our homes and gatherings are safe and secure. Here are some simple tips to keep your celebrations merry, and worry-free.
Lights
- Use only lights certified by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or another recognized safety standards association.
- Indoor lights belong indoors, and outdoor lights outdoors.
- Inspect all strings before hanging - no frayed wires, broken bulbs, or exposed cords.
- Avoid running cords under carpets or through doorways, and don’t overload electrical sockets. Use multiple outlets or power bars if needed.
- Turn off all lights before going to bed.
Tree
- For a live tree, choose one that’s fresh: green needles that don’t fall easily and bend without breaking.
- Cut a small section off the trunk before placing it in water to help absorption.
- Keep the tree in a sturdy stand, away from heat sources like fireplaces, radiators, or candles.
- Water regularly - especially in the first few days.
- Dispose of the tree promptly after the holidays; a dry tree is a fire hazard.
- If using an artificial tree, ensure it’s fire-resistant.
- Use non-combustible decorations and avoid sharp or breakable ornaments if you have young children.
Presents
- Keep small, loose objects out of reach of young children.
- Install batteries yourself and ensure they’re secure.
- Discard plastic wrap, packing material, and other packaging immediately.
Candles and Fireplaces
- Never leave lit candles or fireplaces unattended.
- Keep candles out of reach and replace them before they burn too low.
- Use a manufacturer-approved screen for wood-burning fireplaces. For gas fireplaces, remind children the glass is hot.
- Have your chimney inspected and cleaned annually.
- Burn only seasoned hardwood - cleaner and safer.
- Never burn wrapping paper; it can cause a flash fire.
- Check smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors regularly and change batteries annually.
Entertaining
- Clear walkways of snow and ice; use sand on slippery spots.
- Keep stairs and porches well lit.
- Never leave cooking unattended.
Home Security
- Lock doors and windows and set your alarm - even for short absences.
- If you’re away, have someone check your home, collect mail, and shovel snow.
- Use timers for indoor and outdoor lights.
- Keep gifts out of sight from windows.
